MULTAN: Prominent cleric and suspended member of Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Mufti Abdul Qawi strongly condemned the news of his involvement in model Qandeel Baloch’s murder while talking to the representative of a private TV channel on Sunday.
His name hit the headlines after the ‘selfies scandal’ with slain model. “These are just rumours,” he said confidently. Following the mysterious murder case of Qandeel, the police investigated that her cousins Haq Nawaz, Waseem and Arif allegedly abetted her murder for honour and the conspiracy plan was thought up abroad.
According to the police sources, the culprits were transported to Multan in a cab. The police traced out the cab’s driver who was later identified as Abdul Basit, a resident of Shah Salah ud-Din locality. Further interrogations revealed that the driver is a cousin of Mufti Qawi.
However, Mufti Qawi denied his acquaintance with Basit. “The last contact between me and Qandeel was 23 days ago. I am not familiar with Basit or any of the suspects for that matter. Anything I know about them is gained from the newspapers and TV channels.”
The key suspect Waseem had been sent to jail on a 14-day judicial remand whereas Haq had also been handed over to the police on a five-day physical remand. Arif who resides in Saudi Arabia would be brought back to Pakistan through Interpol and held accountable.
Waseem had stated in a polygraph test in Lahore earlier this month that he had grabbed her arms while Haq strangled her. In this murder case, the state became a party and thus her parents could not pardon the killers. They however denied any wish to pardon Waseem and others involved in their daughter’s murder.
