Pakistan Literacy Project, one of the flagship programmes of Idara e Taleem o Aagahi (ITA), and sponsored by Room to Read, arranged a 4-day workshop on Book Development for young children with the industry’s leading practitioners. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Mahesh Prathirathna of Room to Read and Ms. Rumana Husain of Idara-eTaleem o Aagahi (ITA) from 1 to 4 February in Lahore. The workshop was attended by young as well as experienced creative Writers, Illustrators and Editors from all over Pakistan to develop 15 exciting Urdu storybooks for children. It was the first time in the country that writers, illustrators, editors and art editors had come together from Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Swat, and other places to collaborate on this project. Three Publishers also participated. They are: the National Book Foundation (NBF), Alif Laila Book Bus Society (ALBBS) and Maqbool Academy. The workshop was also attended by Reviewers from the Punjab Curriculum and Text Book Board (PCTB), Directorate of Curriculum Assessment and Research Sindh (DCAR), Sindh Textbook Board (STB), Sindhi Language Authority (SLA) and The National Curriculum Council Pakistan (NCCP). The Pakistan Literacy Project is working to improve a child’s literacy and book reading habits in Pakistan by establishing libraries, distribution of internationally adapted storybooks in local languages, Capacity Building of district and primary school implementers and strengthening the publishing industry by developing culturally relevant, age-appropriate storybooks in local languages.
